Human brains break down around a million dollars. We didn't evolve to comprehend billions. So when we say Elon Musk is worth $250 billion, it's just abstract noise. To make it make sense, we ran the math to see what that number actually looks like in physical $100 bills.

Two hundred and fifty billion dollars means 2.5 billion individual $100 bills. That weighs 2,500 metric tons. If you dumped it in an Olympic swimming pool, it would overflow and fill half of another one. Spread flat, it covers a football field about two feet deep. It sounds like an exaggeration, but it's just basic arithmetic using the dimensions of a US note.

The logistics of simply existing with this much physical cash are completely absurd. To move it, you would need twenty-five fully loaded 18-wheelers, or fifteen 747 cargo flights. If you sat down and counted it by hand, one bill per second without ever sleeping, it would take 79 years. Paying armored cars to move it across town would take a quarter of a million trips.

The median American net worth is roughly $192,000. In hundreds, you can fit that in a shoebox. A millionaire can fit their net worth in an average backpack. Musk has 250,000 of those backpacks. If a normal person works for forty years and earns $1.7 million, Musk's wealth equals 147,000 complete working lifetimes. When you render the median American's wealth next to Musk's in our visualizer, the American's shoebox is basically invisible.

He could buy every single NFL franchise and still have $150 billion lying around. Buying Twitter for $44 billion took less than a fifth of his net worth. He could buy every ounce of gold in Fort Knox and still have enough loose change to buy an island. If he spent a million dollars every single day, it would take him nearly seven centuries to go broke. During his peak wealth growth in 2021, his net worth jumped by over a thousand dollars every second.

I don't care about making a political point about billionaires right now. I just want to ground the math. A million and a billion sound almost the same, but they represent totally different universes. A million seconds is twelve days. A billion seconds is thirty-two years. We argue over wealth taxes, philanthropy, and wages constantly, but we are debating numbers that our brains literally cannot picture.
