The 5 Biggest Cash Heists in History, Visualized
Around $1.2 billion was stolen from Iraq's central bank in 2003. That is the largest cash heist ever. I had to run the math to see what that actually looks like in physical bills.
#5: Dunbar Armored Robbery ($18.9M, 1997)
On a September night in 1997, six men hit the Dunbar Armored facility in Los Angeles and walked away with $18.9 million. At the time, it was the largest cash robbery in US history. Allen Pace III, a safety inspector who worked there, masterminded the whole thing because he knew the camera blind spots. The crew wore masks, rushed the guards during a shift change, loaded rented U-Haul trucks, and vanished in thirty minutes. In $100 bills, $18.9 million weighs about 189 kilograms, or 416 pounds. It shrinks down to just 0.21 cubic meters. You could fit the entire haul in the trunk of a large sedan. The gang only got caught because one of them bought a jet ski and paid cash for home renovations.
